The Center for Environmental & Natural Sciences (CENS) at Freedom High School offers a 4-year program of studies designed to include strong laboratory and field investigation components. The curriculum will be integrated with other educational disciplines to allow students to understand relationships between environmental science and these disciplines, as well as to understand its relationship with every day life. YouTube Space Lab <
http://www.youtube.com/spacelab?feature=inp-pr-space> is a worldwide educational initiative that challenges 14-18 year-old students to design a science experiment that can be performed in space. CENS Young Women (SIOW) Scholarship Opportunity
FYI:  Young Women in the CENS program.

My name is Mary Harrison. I am a member of Soroptimist International of Woodbridge (SIOW). Soroptimist International is a non-profit organization of business and professional women who are dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in our local communities and around the world. The following website provides information about SIOW and about the national and international levels of the organization:

Each year, Soroptimist clubs honor young women (between the ages of 14 and 17 by December 1) who volunteer their time, talent, and energy to causes that make the community and the world a better place. The Violet Richardson Award, named for the president of the first Soroptimist club, is an excellent way to recognize, acknowledge, and encourage the efforts of these young women. Typically, the recipient of this award is invited to an awards banquet in May, where she receives recognition for her community service, a nominal monetary amount, and a donation in her name to the organization where she serves.

Students may complete the attached Violet Richardson Award application form and email it to me at mharrison46@hotmail.com or print and mail the form to me, using the SIOW mailing address on the form.

Three recipients were chosen for recognition last year. They were from Spotsylvania High School, Brentsville District High School, and Woodbridge High School.

The deadline for receiving the completed application is December 1, 2011.

Thank you so much for your help.

Sincerely,

Mary Harrison, Ed. D.

Toy Drive at Leesylvania State Park
December 10th we are having a toy drive for Trevor’s Treasures, a charity that gives toys to children in cancer wards. Like the food drive, admission for the event is one toy per person. We can use extra hands with running the event and we would love if some of the students wanted to come as participants.

Thanks again!

Please report to the front office to see Maria Burgos-Singleton (703) 494-5157.  She will have a sign in sheet to record the time and create certificates. Science Fair Projects
Science Fair is rapidly approaching.  You should be thinking about something that you would like to investigate.  All CENS science classes are required to participate in the science fair.  AP Science classes are EXEMPT from the science fair in order for you to do much better on the AP Exam.  Ninth grade Advanced Earth Science students are now going to be included in the process and are piloting a computer program along with Physics to do their investigations.  All other classes will do a traditional science project.  Click on the Science Fair tab under CENS on the schoolfusion website for information, dates, paperwork and much more. See your CENS science teacher for more information about the Freedom HS Science Fair.  Don't wait till the last minute!  Good luck.
